A Warhorse co-founder says only Rockstar dares to raise prices and that it's “necessary for this business to survive”. GTA 6 costs $80 and, according to Take-Two, the $100 edition is the top seller.

Quick answer Martin Klíma, co-founder of Warhorse, the studio behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, hopes GTA 6 will "blaze the trail" so other games can raise their prices too. He says only Rockstar and Take-Two "can afford, or can dare" to do it. GTA 6 launches at $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate, and according to VGC, Take-Two says the expensive one is the top seller.

GTA 6's price has been an awkward question for months. This week someone in the industry said out loud what many studios think: they hope Rockstar does the dirty work for them.

What Warhorse said

Klíma told PC Gamer, in comments reported by VGC. He began by admitting the GTA series doesn't appeal to him at all, and went on:

"The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price. That would help a lot, but everybody's scared to death about it. Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost."

He added that Rockstar and Take-Two are the only ones "who can afford, or who can dare, to increase the price of games, which I think is long overdue and also necessary for this business to survive. So I wish them all the luck."

What GTA 6 actually costs

EditionSpainUnited States
Standard€79.99$80
Ultimate (digital only)€99.99$100

The euro prices are from Rockstar's official site; the US ones are VGC's. It isn't the first game at that price, since Nintendo has already sold some at $80, but it is the biggest. And one detail explains everyone else's interest: according to VGC, Take-Two says the $100 edition is its top seller. All the editions are in our price guide.

Both sides of the debate

The industry's argument: making a big game costs more and more, inflation has eaten into the old $60-70 price, and the industry has been hit by layoffs and closures. Raising prices would be the most direct way out, but nobody wants to go first.

The players' argument: it working for GTA 6 doesn't mean it works for everyone. According to a survey cited by VGC, 62% of the most engaged players no longer buy games at full price and wait for discounts. If an $80 game isn't GTA, a lot of people will probably wait.

And there's an irony: GTA 6 hasn't charged more than was feared. For months there was talk of $100 for the base edition, and it landed at $80. What the industry wants to copy isn't an outrageous price, but permission to go up one step.
