Its crypto coin sank and the leaker is calling it off “for now”. What its message says, what the “dead man’s switch” is, and what changes for the launch.
Four days ago it was threatening to release the whole game. Today it is saying goodbye. In between, the coin it hoped to fund itself with collapsed.
What the message says
According to Kotaku, which reproduces it, the text has three parts. The key lines:
- No playable build: "The 30M was not reached, so no build." Uploading more than 200 GB anonymously, it adds, was a risk worth taking only if the milestone was reached.
- The ending, withheld: it claims to have the game's ending and says it decided against releasing it because it would "ruin the experience" for players. As proof it points to its latest video.
- "The leeks stop here. For now," as quoted by Eurogamer.
- The "dead man's switch": if it is caught, it says, the spoilers it still holds will be published automatically (TheGamer).
Some of the domains for its website are already down, according to Kotaku.
The last video
It runs about four minutes and shows fragments of the final missions, with no context. Eurogamer has watched it and plays it down: it does not appear to be the ending sequence or final cutscene, though the location could be a spoiler. That is why we are not describing it. If you want to reach 19 November unspoiled, best not to go looking for it.
The coin sank
The ultimatum depended on its crypto coin reaching a $30 million market cap. According to Eurogamer, it peaked at $7.8 million and three days later was at $1.2 million. Kotaku had already reported it halving in 24 hours.
In the same message, Cyberleek denies it was a scam: it says it sold only "twice", kept "trading fees only" and that the token "was always a donation, never an investment". Kotaku notes that everything pointed to another rug pull, like August's, when the account vanished with about $250,000.
What changes
- No full game leak, if it keeps its word. That matters most to Rockstar five weeks from launch.
- It may come back. It disappeared in August and resurfaced in October, Eurogamer warns.
- The investigation continues. Take-Two has been in court since August trying to identify it, and no arrest has been announced. Last week's FBI arrest was a different case.
- Rockstar has said nothing. Nor did it discuss Cyberleek in its big Bloomberg interview the same day, which we cover in how GTA 6 was made.
GamesRadar sums it up in its headline: Rockstar wins without doing anything.
