The leaker resurfaced on 8 October with footage from a development build. What it shows, why it proves little about the final game, and what Rockstar and Take-Two say.
It looked like a closed case. Cyberleek stopped posting in late August, just before Rockstar premiered An Extended Look on Netflix, and according to GamesRadar vanished with about $250,000 in crypto. Six weeks before launch, the leaker is back.
What happened, day by day
- 5 October. Cyberleek's website, dormant since August, shows a poll with hidden text. TheGamer flags it: either they are back, or someone else controls the site.
- 8 October. A 367 MB file appears with a video of about 25 minutes, the leaker's emblem overlaid. Eurogamer watches it and concludes it "appears to be legitimate".
- 9 October. A new poll, with four options split between Jason and Lucia, which according to Notebookcheck closes on 11 October. Almost every vote asked for a Lucia side mission.
For the background, see our full timeline of the case since 18 August.
What it shows, without spoilers
We have not watched the video and will not link to it. This is what outlets that have seen it describe, leaving the plot out:
- Where it happens. Most of it takes place at the Thrillbilly Mud Club, the mud-and-motors festival already seen in the trailers. The protagonists buy clothes, pick a rental bike and race in a dirt-bike event (Eurogamer).
- First-person camera. Jason drives several cars from an interior view and, at one point, gets out and carries on in first person (Push Square).
- Nudity. Jason appears completely naked for more than ten minutes; Lucia is seen from behind, topless, before a night-time BASE jump (Eurogamer). Pedestrians do not react to it (PC Gamer).
- A dev menu. At one point a tank spawns out of thin air. Whoever is playing has tools that are not in the retail game.
- Spoilers. GamesRadar and Push Square warn there are story scenes. We are not detailing them.
Why it does not prove what the game will be like
The footage comes from a development build being manipulated through an internal menu, and that changes what can be concluded.
- First person. According to Dexerto, Rob Nelson told the channel Flow Games in August that GTA 6 would not have a complete first-person mode, only when aiming certain weapons. The camera existing in an internal build does not say whether it reaches the final game. Rockstar has not confirmed it.
- Nudity. Officially there is little: IGN saw Jason naked in the shower with the camera covering him, and the age ratings mention nudity and sex scenes. Walking around undressed may be down to the dev menu, as Eurogamer and PC Gamer point out.
As Push Square sums up: this is not a video from Rockstar, so it does not count as confirmation.
Once again, the money
The video ends by asking for money for "an expensive project" that "needs a lot of hardware", and repeats that whoever posts it is not affiliated with Rockstar. This time there is no cryptocurrency pitch inside the video, Eurogamer notes, but the new poll does come with fundraising goals, according to Notebookcheck. It is the same scheme as in August: people vote on what gets leaked, and pay to vote.
Rockstar stays quiet and Take-Two keeps looking
Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has commented on this video. Rockstar's last word on Cyberleek came in August, when it called the leaks "heartbreaking" for the team and asked people to wait for 19 November. Take-Two has sought subpoenas against several platforms, among them Discord, Microsoft and X, to identify whoever is responsible. No identification and no arrest have been announced in this case. Where the investigation stands.
The other leaker goes on trial on 9 November
There is a second front that has nothing to do with Cyberleek. Arion Kurtaj, linked to the Lapsus$ hacking group and accused of the 2022 hack that exposed the first GTA 6 footage, is due to stand trial from 9 November at Woolwich Crown Court in London, ten days before launch. The date was given on LinkedIn by the chambers representing him, Red Lion Chambers, and reported by GameRant and Notebookcheck.
In 2023 he was found unfit to plead. That is why the jury did not decide then whether he was guilty, only whether he had committed the acts, and found that he had on twelve counts; the court imposed an indefinite hospital order. According to the chambers, he has now been assessed as fit to plead after two years of treatment, and it is at this trial that criminal responsibility will be decided. The date may move: so far the only confirmation is the chambers' own post.
How to dodge spoilers
With a poll closing on 11 October, the sensible assumption is that more videos are coming. If you want to reach the 19th unspoiled, mute terms such as "GTA 6", "GTA VI", "Cyberleek" and "leak" on your social networks, and turn off autoplay. It is on our launch preparation checklist (in Spanish).
Frequently asked questions
Is the new Cyberleek video real?
Eurogamer has seen it and says it appears legitimate, and it matches locations from the official trailers. Rockstar has neither confirmed nor denied it.
Will GTA 6 have a first-person mode?
Rockstar has not announced one. The leaked video shows that camera in a development build, but in August Rob Nelson said there would be no complete first-person mode, according to Dexerto.
Can you walk around naked in GTA 6?
It is not known. There is confirmed nudity in specific scenes, such as the shower IGN saw. What the leak shows may depend on a dev menu that will not be in the final game.
