Issue 382 went live digitally on 29 September with interviews with Rockstar staff. Here is what it promised; what it actually contains, hurricanes included, is in our stories on the feature.
Since August's gameplay, Rockstar has shared almost nothing about the game itself. That changes this week: US magazine Game Informer puts it on the cover with the longest feature published on GTA 6 so far.
What the feature covers
It is written by Marcus Stewart, a staff writer born in South Florida, who spoke with several Rockstar lead designers. The focus is how the studio built Leonida, its Florida parody. Per Game Informer's own announcement, it covers:
- An advanced weather system simulating Florida's "less sunny" weather phenomena.
- A "staggering" amount of wildlife, native and otherwise, on land, sea and air.
- How Rockstar researched Miami and Florida to build, they say, its most culturally and aesthetically accurate world yet.
The weather, carefully
Several outlets are already talking about hurricanes and tropical storms. Nobody official says that: all the magazine teases is a system simulating Florida's "less sunny" weather. Hurricanes are a logical guess — Florida gets them every year — but until the feature is out, a guess is what they are.
Update: it is no longer a guess. The story confirms tropical storms and hurricanes; see our weather story.
The cover
The artwork is by Rockstar, showing Jason and Lucia, and the magazine pitches it as a collector's piece. We do not reproduce it here because it belongs to Game Informer; it can be seen in its announcement.
What we already knew about Leonida
The feature builds on ground Rockstar had already laid out:
- The map is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, as Rockstar itself told The New York Times in August.
- Besides Vice City, we have seen the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
- Wildlife already showed up in the first trailer, with that alligator strolling into a store, and the official merchandise revolves around one.
What would be new is how weather and animals work inside the game. The territory is summed up in the GTA 6 map.
