We tour every confirmed region of the state of Leonida: the big city, the southern keys, the swamps and the rural interior.

Quick answer The map is roughly 3× Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is double Los Santos in surface area and 11× larger in built-up area. Six regions: Vice City, the Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
Update · 29 September 2026 Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, tells Game Informer that Leonida is Rockstar's biggest map "by some degree" and around twice the size of GTA V's (VGC). That doesn't quite match the "three times Red Dead Redemption 2" Rockstar gave in August, and the studio hasn't explained how it measures; treat it as an order of magnitude. The story also describes each region: we sum it up in this story.

📐 UPDATED AUGUST 28 — Rockstar has now given proportions in "An Extended Look": the complete map is around 3x Red Dead Redemption 2's, and Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos (and 11x larger in built-up area). Two new regions are confirmed: Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.

The Grand Theft Auto VI map is not just Vice City. Rockstar has built the entire state of Leonida, a reinterpretation of Florida stretching from the southern keys to the inland swamps. It is by far the most ambitious open world the studio has ever created, and in this article we cover every confirmed region and what can be deduced from official material.

Vice City, the heart of the map

Vice City is Leonida's capital and the densest area in the game. Unlike the 2002 version, this recreation of Miami is a contemporary metropolis: beachfront skyscrapers, residential neighborhoods, industrial zones and a vertical financial district. The trailers show Ocean Drive with its art deco architecture, nightclubs, and a level of street life (pedestrians, traffic, shops with interiors) that points to the most alive city ever seen in a GTA.

Leonida Keys: the southern islands

South of Vice City lie the Leonida Keys, the game's version of the Florida Keys. It is a chain of islands connected by overseas highways, with marinas, stilt houses and turquoise water. Official material shows speedboats, fishing and smuggling: everything suggests the Keys will be a key setting for maritime trafficking missions.

Grassrivers: the game's Everglades

The Everglades equivalent is called Grassrivers: swamps, airboats, alligators and isolated communities. It is the wildest area of the map and where wildlife will play the biggest role. Rockstar has confirmed animals react to the player and to each other, inherited and expanded from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Port Gellhorn and the interior

Port Gellhorn represents the other Florida: a decaying coastal town with motels, pawn shops and an underground economy. The state's interior includes rural areas, roadside gas stations and small towns. This geographic diversity suggests the story will travel across the whole state, not stay confined to the big city.

Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga: the missing regions

"An Extended Look" revealed two areas absent from earlier material: Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. They join Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn and Grassrivers, confirming the state has more geographic variety than had been shown — and the name Mount Kalaga suggests elevation, something Leonida appeared to lack.

How big is the map?

We now have figures. Rockstar confirmed in August 2026 that the complete map is around three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is twice the area of Los Santos, but the telling figure is another: in built-up area and density it is eleven times larger. It isn't just bigger — it's incomparably denser.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5's?

Yes. Rockstar has confirmed the complete map is around three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is twice the area of Los Santos, and eleven times larger in built-up area and density.

Can you explore the whole map from the start?

Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, but the series tradition is to leave the full map open from the start or unlock it very early. No prolonged artificial barriers are expected.

Are there other cities besides Vice City?

Yes. Port Gellhorn is confirmed as a second city, and the state includes smaller towns across the Keys, the swamps and rural inland Leonida.
