Miami-Dade's mayor pitched Rockstar on recreating GTA 6 areas in the real city. The county sheriff has publicly objected. A story with layers.

Updated · 23 September 2026 The campaign has started: there is a "Welcome to Vice City" sign on the Kaseya Center roof. We cover it here.
Developing story This is a commercial pitch submitted to Rockstar, not a signed deal. Rockstar has not commented publicly.

There is something genuinely funny here: GTA VI is inspired by Miami — and now Miami wants to look like GTA VI.

The mayor of Miami-Dade County has been pitching Rockstar Games on recreating areas from the game in the real city as a launch campaign. And the county's own police force has publicly objected.

What the county actually proposed

According to the pitch deck, submitted to Rockstar in June and first reported by local outlet The Miamian, the plan included:

It is, transparently, a bid to capture some of Rockstar's marketing spend and draw visitors.

The police response

County sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez issued a joint statement opposing it. Their argument, in their own words: the county should promote the Miami-Dade it has worked hard to build, not a fictional version of the community defined by crime and violence.

It is a coherent objection. It is also, inevitably, an argument the series has been having since 1997.

Why this is more interesting than it looks

1. The loop closes

Vice City is a parody of Miami. Real Miami wanting to dress as its own parody to attract tourism is a turn the game's script would not dare write. The satire worked because it exaggerated something recognisable; now the recognisable wants to copy the exaggeration.

2. It measures the real scale of this launch

A county of over two and a half million people drafting a formal partnership pitch for a video game says more about GTA VI's magnitude than any sales forecast. This is not games marketing: it is municipal politics.

3. Rockstar gains nothing by responding

The studio has stayed out of debates about violence in its games for decades, and there is no reason to start three months before launch. Silence is the likely answer.
