31 million watched on Netflix and 22 million more on YouTube. A week later, UK console sales jumped a third. We go through the real numbers.
There are big launches and there are events. The week-after data puts GTA VI firmly in the second category, and revises what we knew upward.
The real audience, corrected
The first figure to circulate after the premiere was 3.97 million concurrent viewers on third-party streams. It was the only number measurable in real time, and it was far too low.
The three figures measure different things and shouldn't be added up: Netflix counts a view as hours watched divided by runtime, YouTube counts every play that starts, and the 4 million are concurrent viewers of live streams. Even so, each of them on its own is huge for a 26-minute video about a game that isn't out yet.
The console effect
According to analysts NielsenIQ, in the week after the premiere UK sales moved like this:
| Platform | Weekly change |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | +33% |
| Xbox Series X|S | +34% |
It is one market and one week, so it should not be extrapolated globally. But the context is what makes it meaningful.
Why Sony and Microsoft needed this
Both platforms were coming off a difficult year. UK PS5 sales fell sharply over the summer, and 2025 was Xbox's worst year on record in that market. The underlying cause is not lack of interest — it is price.
What it signals for November
- A second, larger spike is coming. August was a reaction to a trailer. November has product, and anyone without a console has a deadline.
- Stock may be the bottleneck. With a component crisis in the background, the question is not demand but supply.
- Watch for bundles. Given this track record, console editions with the game included are very likely. If you are buying a console to play it, waiting for the bundle usually works out better.
