3.97 million people followed the premiere through third-party streams. Two platforms went down. We go through the numbers and which records still stand.

The number 3.97 million concurrent viewers followed "An Extended Look" through third-party streams. Twitch suffered a major outage and Netflix was overwhelmed.
Update · 29 September 2026 When we wrote this, Netflix hadn't given its figure. On 1 September it reported that the Extended Look drew 31.1 million views in its first four days and was number one in 87 of 93 countries (Variety). On YouTube, the official video is at about 29.6 million plays as of 29 September.

Rockstar did something no studio had done: premiere a gameplay presentation on Netflix. The risk was obvious — putting a subscription wall in front of the year's most anticipated material — and the community solved it on its own, live, on other platforms.

What happened that night

Why the figure is bigger than it looks

The 3.97 million is only those who watched via third parties. It does not include:

Put another way: nearly four million people preferred watching the video with a stranger talking over it to watching it alone. That is not an audience figure, it is a collective-event figure.

The Netflix bet, assessed

The reasonable question is whether the deal made sense. Putting the material behind a subscription reduces direct reach by definition. But the result suggests the opposite of what was expected: the barrier amplified the event, pushing millions toward collective streams and turning a video into an appointment.

For Netflix, having its service overwhelmed by a video game trailer is publicity you cannot buy. For Rockstar, the conversation lasted days instead of hours.

On records Comparisons with historical live-audience records are delicate: each platform measures differently and "concurrent viewers" does not mean the same on Twitch as on YouTube. The 3.97 million figure is solid for what it measures; extrapolating it to "most-watched premiere ever" is not.

What remains

The full video is still on Rockstar's official YouTube channel, and it is the best source of information about the game to date. If you missed it that night, you missed nothing but the atmosphere.
