Rockstar confirmed the baseline figure. What it has not confirmed is a 60 FPS mode — and that is where the real conversation is.
Rockstar confirmed the baseline figure and the reaction was predictable. It is worth separating two discussions that are getting mixed: whether 30 FPS is acceptable in 2026, and whether there will be an alternative.
What was actually said
The game runs at 30 frames per second on current consoles. On a 60 FPS performance mode Rockstar has not spoken clearly, and reporting suggests the studio itself has not settled it.
Why 30 and not 60
This is not arbitrary or technical laziness. It follows directly from everything else Rockstar confirmed this week:
- A world with more than ten times GTA V's animations and individually art-directed NPCs.
- Urban density well beyond Los Santos: more pedestrians, more traffic, more simulation per square metre.
- Simulation systems running constantly in the background — weather, air and marine traffic, reactive police behaviour.
Doubling the frame rate halves the time available per frame for all of it. In practice that means cutting crowd density, draw distance or shading quality. It is a trade, not a switch.
Generation context
| Game | Quality mode | Performance mode |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | 30 FPS | No |
| GTA V (current-gen release) | 30 FPS | Yes, 60 FPS |
| GTA VI | 30 FPS confirmed | unconfirmed |
The relevant precedent is GTA V's re-release: Rockstar did implement a 60 FPS mode, but on a rescaled 2013 game, not a new engine running at its limit.
The PS5 Pro question
It is many people's reasonable hope and deserves an honest answer: nothing is confirmed. More powerful hardware existing does not automatically mean the studio will spend optimisation work on a specific mode. It usually happens, but it is a schedule and budget decision Rockstar has not communicated.
And on PC
The PC version has no announced date. When it arrives, frame rate will depend on your hardware, not on this decision. The studio's history — GTA V took a year and a half to reach PC, RDR2 a little over a year — suggests patience.
What we have learned since
A month later, nothing has changed: Rockstar hasn't confirmed a 60 FPS mode or given resolution figures for any console. The 30 FPS figure came from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, in an interview with Portuguese outlet Flow Games, and on 60 he said he had to check with the technical team (Eurogamer). Summaries of Game Informer's 29 September cover story, which focuses on the world, weather and wildlife, bring no new performance details.
The console comparison is in GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox Series X, which we corrected on 28 September because it assumed a 60 FPS mode nobody has confirmed. And if you're choosing between consoles, see do you need a PS5 Pro?
