Eight mechanics confirmed by the official gameplay, three still open and one that was false: online from day one. The check, point by point.
In August 2026 an enormous amount of unofficial GTA 6 material went around the internet. We never hosted or linked it, but we did write about what was being said, and in some cases we took it as read too soon. A month on there is something to check it against: Rockstar published "An Extended Look", 26 minutes of real gameplay, and briefed the press. Here is the comparison, claim by claim.
What Rockstar has confirmed
| What was claimed | How it turned out |
|---|---|
| Six-star wanted level | Confirmed: visible in the official gameplay |
| Police identify you by traits | Confirmed: face, clothes and vehicle, and changing hair or wearing a mask helps |
| Eating and training affect physique | Confirmed, as in San Andreas |
| An honour-style morality system | Confirmed: it is called the Criminal Profile |
| Cars burn fuel | Confirmed: refuelling takes about ten seconds |
| Carjacking is no longer one button | Confirmed: break the window or use a slim jim |
| Tougher combat | Confirmed: freer aiming and enemies off the minimap |
| Weapons stored in vehicles | Confirmed with a caveat: only personal vehicles keep the arsenal |
What is still unconfirmed
- The full map of Leonida. Rockstar has not published the map. The only official thing about its size is that it is three times Red Dead Redemption 2's, a figure the company gave in a New York Times feature.
- Functional weapon customisation — sights, magazines. The Ultimate Edition variants are models and finishes, not attachments.
- The boot as a general inventory. What is confirmed is specific: long guns in vehicles, persistent only in personal ones.
What was false
The most repeated claim was also the most wrong: that GTA 6 would ship with an online mode from day one, with 64 players. Rockstar describes the game as a single-player experience and has announced no online mode for 19 November. The only thing it has publicly acknowledged is a 32-player online format in development, mentioned in passing in legal filings.
And it should be said plainly: we published that figure in seven articles, and corrected it on 15 September with a visible notice on each. It is explained in the online article.
What this teaches
- Being right about small things does not validate the big one. The unofficial material described game details well while holding a central claim that was false.
- What can be verified arrives on its own. Everything important was shown by Rockstar within a month.
- A sourceless claim does not improve with age, it just gets repeated more.
Whatever is still open lives in our rumour tracker, with the status of each item and who is saying it.
Our policy on leaked material
We do not host it, link it or describe it in detail. We write about the case — which is news, with lawsuits involved — and about what the company confirms afterwards. The timeline of the case, with no material, is in this tracker.
So were the August leaks real?
Part of the content described mechanics Rockstar later confirmed. That does not make the whole thing reliable: the most repeated claim was false.
Is the full map known yet?
No. Rockstar has not published it. It has only given its size relative to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Will there be online at launch?
It is not announced. The game ships as a single-player experience.
