Rockstar describes GTA VI as 'a single-player experience'. The only official online detail is a 32-player format in court papers. Article corrected on 15 September.

Updated · 17 September 2026 Twitch's CEO points to 2027 for multiplayer, and Take-Two has confirmed GTA Online keeps its support after launch. We cover it here.
Correction · 15 September 2026 This article claimed GTA Online would be available on launch day with up to 64 players. Rockstar never confirmed that. We have rewritten it with what is actually known.
Quick answer It is not expected at launch. Rockstar describes GTA VI as "a single-player experience" and has not announced an online mode for 19 November. The only official detail is an in-development "online 32 player format" mentioned in court filings.

For months it was taken for granted that GTA VI would ship with its online mode from day one. We published that too. It was not true — or at least nothing official supports it.

What Rockstar has said

Announcing the editions and price, Rockstar described the game as "a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet". Not a word about online. In an announcement like that, when something this important goes unmentioned, it is because it is not part of launch.

The only official detail: 32 players

The first detail arrived by accident on 11 September, in filings Rockstar made in the tribunal over the 34 dismissals. There the company references an "online 32 player format" that was "highly confidential". It is not an announcement, gives no date and does not guarantee a final figure. We break it down here.

Why it makes sense for online to follow later

GameReleaseOnline arrived
GTA V17 September 2013GTA Online, 1 October 2013 (two weeks later)
Red Dead Redemption 226 October 2018Red Dead Online beta, 27 November 2018 (a month later)
GTA VI19 November 2026unannounced

Rockstar has always done it this way, for good reasons: separate launches create two commercial moments, and stop the servers of a brand-new online mode buckling on the same day millions start the campaign.

What about current GTA Online?

It keeps running on GTA V, and Rockstar has just reinforced it: in early September it launched its official roleplay server, nopixel 5. There is no official information on transferring characters or progress to GTA VI's online.

Will GTA 6 have an online mode?

Almost certainly, but it is unannounced and not expected on launch day. Rockstar presents the game as a single-player experience.

How many players will GTA 6 online have?

The only official figure is 32, referenced in Rockstar's court filings as an in-development format. It is not confirmed as final.

Can you play GTA 6 solo?

Yes. At launch it is in fact all there will be: Jason and Lucia's campaign.
