Rockstar has said nothing about GTA VI's online mode in two years. It just said something by accident, in a filing it emailed to the press itself.

Updated · 17 September 2026 Twitch's CEO points to 2027 for multiplayer, and Take-Two has confirmed GTA Online keeps its support after launch. We cover it here.
Quick answer Rockstar has referenced an in-development "online 32 player format" in writing. It is the first thing it has said about GTA VI multiplayer — and it said it in a court filing the company itself emailed to the press.

For two years we have been asking what happens to Grand Theft Auto multiplayer when GTA VI arrives. Rockstar has given nothing: not in the trailers, not in the Extended Look, not in the interview round after it.

It has now broken that silence in the most unlikely way possible: in court papers.

Context makes it more interesting: announcing the editions, Rockstar presented the game as "a single-player experience", with no mention of online. So this "32 player format" points to a mode arriving after 19 November, not one at launch.

Where it appears

Among the documents Rockstar and Take-Two filed in the final hearing of the case over the 34 dismissed staff — which the companies themselves emailed to several outlets — there is a passage describing what confidential information employees were sharing on the union Discord.

One item, per the filing, was an "online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time".

Careful what it actually means The description is extremely brief and sits inside a legal argument, not an announcement. It says a 32-player format existed in development. It does not confirm that is the final number, that it is called GTA Online, or how it will work.

What can and cannot be inferred

What it suggests

A framework for 32-player sessions tied to GTA VI, or to whatever version of GTA Online accompanies it. That would be double the 16 of GTA V's 2013 launch, and consistent with current hardware.

What it does not say

GamePlayers per session
GTA Online (2013, PS3/360)16
GTA Online (current-gen)30
Red Dead Online32
GTA VI32 referenced in court filings

The irony

Here is what made the story travel. The filing exists because Rockstar argues that employees risked confidential information by mentioning it on a private Discord of around 340 members.

The argument the company used to defend that position has ended up publishing that very detail, in a document Take-Two emailed to outlets worldwide. From a private server to the international press, by way of explaining why it should never have left that server.

What to expect now

Not much in the short term. Rockstar has not commented and has no incentive to: any clarification would confirm the detail is real. The reasonable expectation is a formal multiplayer announcement closer to 19 November, or after launch — as with GTA V, where GTA Online arrived two weeks later.
