Quick answer “An Extended Look” is 26 minutes of gameplay released on 27 August 2026 and captured entirely on PlayStation 5. It confirmed the six-star wanted level, the karma system, the roughly 80-hour campaign, and that much of August's leaked material was genuine.

On August 27, Rockstar Games released "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look", a 26-minute presentation premiered on Netflix and then made freely available. It isn't a trailer: it's the most extensive gameplay showcase of the game to date, captured entirely on PlayStation 5. And it answers nearly every open question — including the big one: whether August's leaks were real.

The story: a criminal conspiracy across the state

The video finally outlines the plot. Jason and Lucia are caught up on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. The premise forces them to rely on each other more than ever to make it out alive.

Rockstar also confirms the main campaign runs around 80 hours, above GTA V and in line with Red Dead Redemption 2.

Two protagonists — and both at once

An important question is settled: you can play as Jason, as Lucia, or as both together, with seamless switching between characters. This isn't GTA V's three separate protagonists; here the couple works as a unit, consistent with the story.

There's more: the romance between Lucia and Jason is optional. It's the first time the series includes a relationship the player can choose to develop.

The police system: six stars confirmed, and much more

Here comes the most anticipated confirmation. The wanted level returns to six stars, reversing GTA V's five-star cap. But the redesign goes far beyond the number:

It's exactly the trait-based identification system the leaks pointed to — the three icons for clothing, face and vehicle — developed with even more depth than anyone anticipated.

Your body matters: eating and training like San Andreas

Confirmed: diet and exercise affect the character's physique, just like GTA San Andreas. It fits the stamina bar and gym seen in leaked material, and restores one of the most fondly remembered systems from the 2004 entry.

Stealing cars is no longer one button

One of the meatiest details. Approaching a vehicle door brings up two options: smash the window or use a slim jim. And there are layers on top: available methods depend on the tools you carry and your progression. Stealing a car goes from automatic gesture to a decision with consequences — breaking glass makes noise and leaves traces.

Pedestrians that behave like people

NPCs are far more varied in appearance and, crucially, react realistically to what you do. The example the presentation itself gives: walking around with a rifle in hand won't go down the same way depending on the neighbourhood. It's a leap from GTA V's indifferent crowds.

Everything you can do in the open world

The presentation devotes a block to activities, and the list is broad: car and bike racing on a racetrack, airboats, jet skis, canoes, base jumping from skyscrapers with a parachute, and both free diving and scuba diving.

Criminal Profile: the game keeps your record

One of the most interesting reveals from the previews. GTA VI includes a "Criminal Profile" that logs your criminal behaviour over the course of the game. It isn't the momentary star counter: it's a cumulative record the game remembers.

The wanted indicator also shows icons for the specific offences drawing police attention, and the response escalates with the severity of what you've done.

The karma system, confirmed

Here there is official confirmation, and it contradicts what many of us had filed as unverified. The video shows positive karma for petting a dog and negative karma for Lucia as she flees a store robbery. The morality system the leaks pointed to exists and works in both directions.

Chapter-based structure, like Red Dead Redemption 2

The campaign is organised in chapters, just like RDR2. And there's a name behind the 80-hour figure: Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, has stated his latest full playthrough — main story plus narrative side content — took him that long.

Combat with weak points and slow motion

Gunplay includes targeted aiming with slow-motion sequences highlighting enemy weak points during firefights. It's an evolution of Red Dead's Dead Eye transplanted to GTA's urban pace.

Social media exists inside the game

Consistent with the satire of viral Florida: there are social networks within the world. NPCs can livestream what's happening, and comments and reactions appear on screen in certain situations. Cause a scene in the street and someone is filming it.

The map, finally with numbers

Rockstar has finally given proportions. The complete map is around three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos — but in built-up area and density, eleven times larger.

And two new regions appear that we didn't know about: alongside the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn and Grassrivers, the presentation shows Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. We cover it in our article on the map of Leonida.

Leaks: what's confirmed and what isn't

This was the big question after the CYBERLEEK case, and we now have a partial answer:

Confirmed by Rockstar: the six-star wanted level, the appearance-based police identification system (clothing, face, cameras), the influence of exercise and diet on physique and — crucially — the karma system, visible when petting a dog or fleeing a robbery. The leaks were right on the essentials.

Still unconfirmed officially: the fuel gauge and engine health, the trunk as inventory and functional weapon customisation. They appeared in the leaked HUD, but Rockstar didn't highlight them. Their absence doesn't mean they were cut — they're simply unverified.

You can compare the detail in our analysis of the leaked mechanics and follow the full case in the leaks timeline.

Captured on PS5, and the date holds

Rockstar has confirmed all footage — gameplay and cinematics — was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. No PC renders, no pre-rendered sequences.

And the video closes by reaffirming what many feared might change after the leak: November 19, 2026 still stands.

How long is GTA 6's story?

The main campaign is estimated at around 80 hours, above GTA V and in line with Red Dead Redemption 2.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Around three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos in area, and eleven times larger in built-up area and density.

Does the trailer confirm the August leaks?

It confirms several key revelations — six stars, appearance-based police identification and the physique system — but doesn't mention others such as the fuel gauge, trunk inventory or morality system, which remain officially unverified.
