Creators who attended the Rockstar North demo describe it. In Red Dead Redemption 2 newspapers changed with what you did, and that is the interesting part.
Here is a small detail that says a lot about the game coming. Among the dozens of things reported by content creators invited to see GTA 6 at Rockstar North's offices, one has stuck: newspapers in shops can be picked up and read page by page.
What was actually described
The detail comes from TGG, one of the creators at the presentation. In a rundown of small details from the demo they devote a section to newspapers: walk up to the rack, pick one up, turn the pages. They add that it would work as a completely optional collectible, the kind that is not flagged on the map.
Other attendees describe the same with shop products and magazines: objects you can handle with no mission attached.
Why this is not trivial
Rockstar already did this in Red Dead Redemption 2, and there newspapers were not set dressing: they changed according to what you had done, reported events in the world, and some editions hid cheat codes. If GTA 6 brings that idea back in a modern, satirical city like Vice City, the newspaper stops being an object and becomes a way of telling the story.
It also fits what Rob Nelson keeps saying about the world: that much of the content is discovered by exploring, with no icons or objectives leading you by the hand.
What the official gameplay already showed
The newspaper detail does not arrive alone: it fits a list of interactions already seen in "An Extended Look", those shown by Rockstar itself:
- Fridges have a drink menu, and some drinks have gameplay effects.
- Stealing a car is a decision: break the window or use a slim jim, depending on the tools you carry.
- Clothes, masks and glasses change on the fly, and that affects whether police recognise you.
- Eating and training change your physique, as in San Andreas.
- Pedestrians react and remember what you do in front of them.
If you want the fine detail, we break it down in our gameplay analysis and in weapons and combat.
What is still unknown
- Whether the content changes with what Jason and Lucia do, as in RDR2.
- How many there are, or whether completing them gives anything.
- Whether Rockstar will confirm it: so far it has published nothing on this.
Will newspapers be fully readable?
The accounts describe flicking through them. Nothing has been said about whether the full text is legible or how much content each edition holds.
Are they good for anything?
They are described as an optional collectible. No reward has been confirmed.
