The version on the official Bilibili channel replaced the original on 31 August. What was blurred, what was not, and why it does not mean the game will differ.
Watch GTA VI's 26-minute presentation on Netflix or YouTube and you see what Rockstar showed. Watch it on Bilibili, China's major video platform, and you see something else: a version full of blur.
What was blurred
| Element | How it was censored |
|---|---|
| Suggestive dancing | Blurred. In the scene of Jason walking through a nightclub, almost the entire screen is blurred |
| Smoking | A blur over his hand when Jason smokes |
| Blood and bodies | Blurred |
| Underwear and cleavage | Blurred |
How it came to light
A GTA Forums user spotted it and creator videotech spread it on social media. The timeline is the odd part: Rockstar first uploaded the uncut version to Bilibili, which stayed up until 31 August. That day it was replaced by the censored one.
What makes it stranger
- Earlier trailers remain uncensored on the same Bilibili channel. Only the Extended Look was edited.
- Rockstar's website in China shows the full video, uncut and with Chinese subtitles, as Kotaku checked.
- The user who uncovered it claims re-uploads of the original are being taken down on Bilibili. That is their claim, not confirmed by Rockstar.
Why this happens
Bilibili operates under Chinese content rules, far stricter on explicit violence, smoking and sexual content than Western ones. That Rockstar's own site shows the full video suggests the decision is about the platform, not a change to the game.
